A project for the Texas Historic Commission. Fort Lancaster was one of the historic Texas frontier forts, which also include the well-known Fort Davis.  Located in far west Texas, near Ozona, Fort Lancaster is stark in its evocation of the vast and empty spaces that were once the frontier.

The visitor center was built in the late 1960's and is typical of the era.  Over time, it had become in need of extensive repair as well as extensive updates and additions.  The project adds new exhibit space, new restrooms, an expanded gift shop area and wide open picnic areas with views to the fort grounds.  The design of the new addition reflects the classic mid-century rustic style of the original building, while enhancing the building's obvious contrast to the historic site.  This accomplishes a prime design goal of ensuring that guests can clearly distinguish the visitor center from the historic fort grounds.
