Sherry Tseng Hill was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Houston, TX as a young teenager. Leaving the certainty of rootedness and the shifting ambiguity of displacement, the feeling of being in the in-between became the springboard for her exploration into the question of identity and one's place in the world.
After practicing as an architect, she recently reclaimed full ownership of her time, and now, again, thinks and makes art-full time. She works at the intersection between craft and art, using personal objects prevalent in our shared surroundings, such as newspapers, children's book pages, photographs, and textiles. By cutting, tearing, and shredding, she excavates from her past. Then, she reconstructs new narratives by weaving, stitching, and gluing. Re-framing the histories is a way to question the attitudes and fears permeating our environment and our behaviors within it. Abstracting these personal narratives is a way of sharing these explorations through a universal perspective.
